About Us
The programs and courses offered through the Language Institute will support the overall goal of promoting and preserving foreign language education at the three consortium member institutions and throughout the region.
The Goals and Objectives of The Language Institute Include:
- To support the development and expansion of academic majors and undergraduate degree programs in Spanish and French, and ultimately in less commonly taught languages that include Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, and Russian.
- To offer undergraduate and graduate credit bearing and non-credit bearing certificate programs focused on improving communicative competency in the target language. Certificate programs will be designed to meet the needs of both students and working professionals in a variety of fields, including health care, law, international business and trade, science, engineering, and the arts.
- To preserve the languages that have contributed to the culture and heritage of the region, such as Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Italian.
- To provide personal and professional development opportunities through credit-bearing and non-credit continued learning courses for the community in foreign language study.
- To provide educational programs that support knowledge and understanding of other cultures in addition to foreign language instruction.
Study of a foreign language and culture is an integral part of a liberal arts education. In the global marketplace that defines today’s world, proficiency in a foreign language has also become a valuable professional commodity. Learning a foreign language can lead to a wide range of internship and career opportunities, as well as personal enrichment. The creation of the Language Institute is a response to the critical need to educate our citizens, our workforce, and our communities to meet the challenges and demands posed by increasing globalization.
